Rona Therapeutics announced on October 13, 2026 a global license agreement with Roche for an investigational RNAi candidate targeting activin receptor-like kinase 7 (ALK7) for obesity and metabolic diseases. The license is exclusive and worldwide. The candidate uses Rona's proprietary extrahepatic delivery platform, according to the company.
Rona will receive upfront and near-term milestone payments of up to $100 million. It is also eligible for up to $1.06 billion in development, regulatory and commercial milestones, plus tiered royalties on global net sales. Reuters put the total deal value at up to $1.16 billion and described Rona as a Chinese biotech.
Strategically, the deal adds what Rona describes as a fat-targeting, non-incretin mechanism to Roche's obesity pipeline, sourced from an RNAi platform company. Per the release, ALK7 is encoded by the ACVR1C gene and is mainly expressed in adipocytes.
Silencing it may reduce visceral fat while preserving lean mass, acting on adipose tissue rather than on appetite as incretin therapies do. Boris L. Zaitra, Roche's Head of Corporate Business Development, said the partnership complements Roche's "robust CVRM pipeline". Rona CEO and founder Stella Shi called ALK7 "a compelling obesity and metabolic disease target with the potential to directly address adipose tissue biology".
The release did not disclose the candidate's code name or development stage, and it did not break out the pure upfront amount. The $1.16 billion total is not stated in the release and is the sum of the two stated figures as reported by Reuters. No Roche-issued press release was located.
Reuters noted that Roche reported positive mid-stage data in September for its obesity and diabetes candidate enicepatide. Whether Roche will disclose the ALK7 candidate's stage remains unresolved.
